Eastern Oregon University Head Start

What is EOU Head Start?
In the heart of La Grande and its neighboring areas, Eastern Oregon University Head Start stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for families seeking quality education and nurturing environments for income-eligible children ages under 5. Our mission extends far beyond traditional preschool education; we are dedicated to fostering holistic child development while honoring the unique backgrounds and circumstances of every family we serve.
Our Guiding Principles:
At Eastern Oregon University Head Start, we are driven by three core values that shape our approach to early childhood education:
Empowering Parents:
We recognize parents as the foremost and most influential teachers in their children’s lives. Through collaborative efforts, we empower parents to actively participate in their child’s learning journey, creating a solid foundation for lifelong learning.
Cultural Diversity:
We celebrate and respect the diverse cultural perspectives within our community. Embracing each family’s rich background creates an inclusive environment where every child feels valued and appreciated.
Comprehensive Support:
Our commitment goes beyond the classroom. We support the complete development of the child, the family, and the community. By addressing social, emotional, and academic needs, we pave the way for well-rounded individuals.
A Conscious Approach to Learning:
Our curriculum is grounded in Conscious Discipline, an evidence-based, trauma-informed behavior management system. This approach integrates social-emotional learning, discipline, and self-regulation. By nurturing emotional intelligence and empathy, we equip children with essential life skills that extend beyond the classroom.
In alignment with the U.S. Department of Education’s five areas of school readiness, we are dedicated to preparing children for a successful future. Our School Readiness approach focuses on
Language and Literacy:
Building strong communication skills, fostering a love for reading, and encouraging expressive language development.
Cognition and General Knowledge:
Stimulating curiosity, promoting problem-solving abilities, and enhancing general knowledge through engaging activities.
Approaches Toward Learning:
Cultivating a positive attitude toward learning, encouraging curiosity, and promoting effective learning strategies.
Physical Well-being and Motor Development:
Emphasizing the importance of physical activity, healthy habits, and fine and gross motor skills development.
Social and Emotional Development:
Fostering emotional intelligence, empathy, and social skills, ensuring children are well-equipped for positive social interactions.
